Your guide to eclipse day success.
Totality lasts a couple of minutes and it does not come back. The difference between the
photos you dreamed about and a day you would rather forget is almost always preparation, not gear. Here
is how I get ready, and what I do when something goes sideways.
The one rule: rehearse the whole thing for real before the day, in conditions as close to the
real event as you can manage. Everything below is in service of that. Umbra automates the shutter so you
can watch the sky, but the automation is only as good as the run you tested.
Weeks ahead build confidence, not just a script
Do a full, realistic dress rehearsal
Not a quick indoor test. Run the complete sequence from first contact to last, outdoors, in heat and
sun like the real day, with the exact rig you will actually use.
- If you plan to run on battery, rehearse on battery so you learn whether it lasts the whole run.
(On the day, wall power is safer. More on that below.)
- Run the entire C1 to C4 span, not just totality, so partial-phase cadence and card capacity
get tested too.
- Pick a hot, sunny day if you can. A laptop that is fine indoors can throttle badly in the sun, and
you want to find that out now, not during totality.
Use the Analyzer ahead of time
After a rehearsal, drop the memory card into your Mac and run the Simulation Analyzer. It reads
every frame and reconciles it against your script: counts, timing, exposure, drops. Fix whatever it
flags now, while you still can. Doing this weeks early is the single best way to catch a problem that
would otherwise only show up on eclipse day.
Leave about a second between frames
Tight bursts look great on paper, but the real limit is how fast each body writes to its card, and a
body with any per-frame processing on (long-exposure or high-ISO noise reduction) is slower still. I run
about 1 second between frames. Multi-camera rigs start dropping frames at 0.4 to 0.6 second
spacing but stay clean at 1 second, and you still get roughly 180 frames per body across a 3-minute
totality, far more than the corona's slow change needs. Reliability beats frame count. Umbra's Script
Wizard sets its minimum spacing from the rig you actually have connected, for exactly this reason, and it is more generous on the universal driver than on a native SDK.
Turn off in-camera noise reduction
This one bit me in testing. Long-Exposure NR and High-ISO NR make a body do extra processing after
each frame, so it can't keep up with a fast burst, and it drops shots. The tell is sneaky: on a four-camera
run with an identical script, the two bodies that had NR on dropped roughly twice as many frames as the
other two. Umbra now flags that asymmetry for you, but it can't read the setting over USB, so check each
body yourself: turn Long-Exposure NR and High-ISO NR off before the day. You can always denoise in
post; you can't get the frame back.
Practice removing your solar filter
At second contact you have a few seconds to pull the filter, and again at third contact to put it
back. Practice until it is smooth and does not jog your framing.
- Push-on filters are strongly recommended over threaded ones. A threaded filter is slow to
spin off, easy to cross-thread under pressure, and can shift your aim. A push-on comes off in one
motion and goes back the same way.
- Mark or feel for the orientation so it seats the same way every time.
Practice and test a battery swap on every body
Some cameras behave oddly across a battery swap: they drop the USB session, forget a setting, or take
a moment to re-enumerate. Find out how each of yours behaves now.
- Swap a battery mid-rehearsal and confirm the camera reconnects and keeps firing.
- Note which bodies need a re-detect afterward, so the real-day surprise is gone.
Have a backup plan, and a manual-takeover plan
Decide in advance what you do if something breaks during totality, because you will not have time to
think it through then.
- Running lots of cameras? Know which one you care about most, and exactly how you would grab
it and fire it by hand if the automation stops. Practice that takeover.
- If a camera drops, Umbra raises an alarm and tries to auto-reconnect it. Decide ahead of time
whether you intervene or let it recover on its own, so you are not improvising.
- Keep your single most-wanted shot (often a clean wide of totality) as a fallback you can capture by
hand if everything else fails.
Scope a last-minute location change
Weather moves. You may have to relocate the day before, or even the morning of, to a spot with a
shorter or longer totality, or with less time to set up.
- Have alternate scripts ready for a longer and a shorter totality, so a new duration does not
mean rewriting under pressure. The Wizard and AI assistant can build these in advance.
- Have a stripped-down "one camera, minimal setup" script for the case where you arrive late and
can only get one body going.
- In Umbra, just set the new location. The contact times, sun position, and validation all recompute
for where you actually are.
The night before remove tomorrow's surprises
Charge, format, scout
- Charge every battery: cameras, the laptop, spares, powered hubs, anything that holds a charge.
- Format every memory card in the camera it lives in, and confirm each has room for the entire
run (rehearsal frame counts tell you how much you need).
- Scout your site if you can: check the horizon and where the sun will be, find level ground,
and pick a spot where you can shade the laptop.
- Load your script in Umbra, set your location, and run one more rehearsal so the rig is in a known
good state when you go to sleep.
The morning of get everything going, calmly
Power up early and verify the whole chain
- Fresh batteries in every body. Power up with plenty of time, not minutes before first contact.
- Confirm each camera connects and fires a test shot, and clear the pre-flight check.
- Set every lens to MANUAL focus, pre-focused on the sun (or infinity, then fine-tuned).
This one is easy to forget and it bites hard: in autofocus the camera hunts focus before every
shot, which adds an unpredictable delay to each frame and can fail to lock on the low-contrast
corona entirely. Manual focus fires instantly and identically every time. Set it and tape the
focus ring if you are worried about bumping it.
- Switch Umbra to the live clock (not the simulated clock). Umbra will remind you if you are
still in simulation on eclipse day, but do it deliberately and confirm the countdown looks right.
- Do a final filter check: filters on for the partial phases.
- One last battery check right before first contact.
Protect the Mac from the heat
This is the failure that catches the most people. A hot Mac throttles its CPU, and a throttling Mac
drops shots.
- Shade and ventilate it. Never let it bake in direct sun or sit on hot ground. Keep air moving
and do not block the vents.
- Run on wall power if you possibly can.
- Turn off Low Power Mode (it throttles the CPU regardless of temperature) and close every
other app.
- Watch the health chip in Umbra's top bar. If it turns yellow or red, fix what it flags before
you arm.
During the eclipse trust it, watch the sky, stay ready
Let the automation work, hold your plan in your hand
- Once you have armed and confirmed, look up. The whole point is that you get to experience totality
instead of fiddling with a laptop.
- If you use voice cues, listen for them: filter off near second contact, filter back on near third.
- If a camera alarms, follow the plan you already decided on. Do not start debugging during totality.
- Capture your one fallback shot by hand if you need to. A single great frame beats a perfect plan
that broke.
Gear that helps
A few inexpensive things that save the day
- A laptop shade hood (a monitor hood, a dark cloth, an umbrella, even a cut-down cardboard
box). It keeps the screen readable in sun and keeps the machine cooler.
- Wall power or a power bank / inverter sized for a multi-hour run.
- Push-on solar filters for fast, repeatable removal and reseating.
- Something to keep the laptop off hot ground (a small table, a chair, a cooler lid) and a small
fan if you have one.
- Spare batteries and cards for every body, and a powered USB hub you have actually
tested with your full rig.
